At the beginning of the year, a new temporary permit allowing workers to stay without a 457 visa has caused debate between political union parties. CFMEU national security O’Conner said proposals to abandon the requirement for language and skills test would worsen employment levels in Australia. On the contrary, Senator Cash argued an effectively managed temporary labour program will not threaten employment levels and transfer skills to Australia result to be further globally competitive in the workforce. To which she states 'A balanced and reasonable approach to skilled migration policy, preferably with bipartisian support, is good for Australia, and most imporatnly good for Australian jobs and the economy.
